Rural Organizing Statement on GOP’s Disastrous Debt Scheme

“We strongly encourage the president to invoke the powers granted by the 14th Amendment  to save the country from the GOP’s debt default.”

House Republicans, many of whom represent rural districts, are hurtling the nation towards an unprecedented debt default that will wreak havoc on our economy — and disproportionately harm our small towns and rural communities.

The following is a statement from Matt Hildreth, Executive Director of Rural Organizing:

Republicans in the 118th Congress seem determined to undermine the progress of the past few years and the government’s commitments to rural America. The House GOP’s recent budget bill would be a disaster for rural communities. Now, they seem determined to force the United States into a reckless default on the nation’s debt, much of which they helped accumulate through their tax cuts for billionaires. House Republicans have proven themselves reckless, for sure, and have also shown once again that they put the interests of the extreme MAGA wing of their party over the needs of their constituents and the country. That they are not reliable negotiating partners is on full display.

President Biden must use every tool at his disposal to prevent the nation from defaulting.  He indicated that he believes he has the authority to address the debt limit unilaterally under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which states that the debt of the nation “shall not be questioned.” We strongly encourage the president to use his executive authority to save the country from the GOP’s debt default and their destructive budget.
