The following is a statement from Matt Hildreth, Executive Director of RuralOrganizing:
In rural America, the cost of living is going up. Today, a handful of corporate monopolies now run our entire economy, and our economic system is rigged for the wealthy and powerful. Corporate landlords have taken over mobile home parks and are jacking up the rent. And a handful of food companies have cornered the market, increased food prices, pocketed historic profits, and screwed over America’s farmers and farm workers in the process.
For over a decade, we’ve been working to build an empowered, thriving, and equitable rural America. Through this work, we’ve spoken to thousands of people in small towns and rural communities nationwide. Consistently, these folks have told us they want government policies that benefit working people, not the elite and programs that give everyday Americans a fair shot.
That is exactly the agenda we have seen today from the Harris-Walz campaign. The Harris-Walz plan would lower the cost of housing, healthcare, and groceries and would be a game changer for millions of rural Americans.
On the other hand, Trump’s plans for the future would raise prices for rural families by $3,900 per year. The only legislation Trump passed in his first term was a massive tax cut for corporations and his rich friends, and he’s promised even more giveaways to the rich while super-charging runaway costs for rural families.
We strongly support the Harris-Walz plan to advance the first-ever federal ban on price gouging on food and groceries and their commitment to taking on corporate landlords. Rural Americans want policies that decrease their cost of living while increasing their quality of life. These are exactly the types of programs rural Americans have been demanding for decades.
